SMOKY SASKATOON (Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Smoky’) NATIVE TO NORTH AMERICA
Smoky Saskatoon is a hardy, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub valued for its sweet, edible berries and ornamental appeal. In spring, it produces clusters of delicate white flowers, followed by abundant purple-blue fruit in early summer. The berries are enjoyed fresh or used in jams and baking, while birds and wildlife also benefit from this reliable food source. Its attractive fall color and adaptability make it an excellent choice for shelterbelts and naturalized plantings.
Growing Conditions:
• Very cold-hardy
• Prefers well-drained soils but adapts to a wide range of soil types
• Tolerates drought once established
• Requires full sun for best fruit production (tolerates partial shade)
• Moderate growing
• Large shrub or small tree – 3–5 m (10–16 ft) tall with a spread of 2–4 m (6–13 ft)
